S4 test
I finally got a new camera today after getting my trusty nikon 4500 stolen last year in ireland. i've been putting off buying a new camera because none of the cameras had a swivel lens and nikon discontinued 4500. a year after, they got s4 on the market and in preparation for the grand asian trip starting this saturday, i went downtown and picked up a unit. the camera itself was 460$cdn+tax and got a 1gb sd card for 120+tax. it's dark out so i can't test out the unit properly so i took some shots while reading the manual in my room.

oh how i missed the swivel! s4 is a 6mp cam with 10x optical zoom lens and 64mb internal ram. it can also do some video and voice recordings. i'll be using voice recording to tape conversations or interviews until i can get a recording add on for my ipod video. 4500 and sq had a video recording limit of 40 seconds but on s4 there isn't one, it'll keep recording until the mem card fills up.
3 initial test shots are taken in my room at night without a tripod, just me in my psedo rocking chair holding the cam as steady as possible. also, i have not altered these imgs in photoshop in anyway other than resize for web.
1x zoom without white balance

with white balance

unaltered cut outs from above shot at 6mp rez. you can tell digital artifacts and compression are visible but it doesn't look like it was taken at night.

10x zoom from the exact same position

i can't wait to test this out in bright sunny day!!!! these indoor night pics blew me away. digicams are notorious to take grainy photos with digital artifacts at night, especially inside but these pics look really clean.
